The Redsnook: Rain+Wind+Low Water=A Battle Of The Dinks

Posted under fly fishing news by Dave Teper

Hells Bay BoatworksLast week, our friend Bill Faulkner called me with an offer, “Dude, Hells Bay Boatworks is looking to pick up the tab to have a team fish the fly division of the Redsnook, you interested?”  I’m usually very interested in free fishing, so I called up my friend Brian Bavosi, who I just spent some time elk hunting with out at his place in Steamboat Springs, CO, and flew him in to be the second angler.

The Redsnook, to my knowledge, is the only tournament in the Naples area with a fly division.  You might think that since this the case, the local fly fishing community would bombard the coordinators of the event with registration requests.  Well, the field consisted of 6 teams.  The object of the tournament was to record 3 snook and 3 reds each day for 2 days. Fish were worth 10 points per inch on the first day and 15 points on day 2.

Day 1 started at 3:30AM, with some cuban coffee, $150 in gas, and a handful of Advil.  The rain was coming down, the wind blowing, and we knew we would be beating the bush blind casting all day………………………………………………………………………………………………………….. the boring part…………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………

SUMMARY:  The event was fun, the fishing sucked, the weather was awful, we won.  Check out Naples News’s coverage of the event if you are at all interested in the boring part.

Congrats to Jeff Legutki (guide to 3rd place fly), Aron Blaisdell (guide to 1st place bait), Tom Shadley (for making it through another one), and Capt. Scott Guthrie and Sondra Jack (1st place spin) of Hells Bay for giving us the opportunity to win this one.
