Fly Fishing Movies: “PERMIT” Premiere
Posted under fly fishing news by Will Benson
Our first film, PERMIT, was a great success. 150+ people turned out for the event at the Tropic Theater in Key West, www.keywestfilm.org, on December 20, 2007. The Film began with a short section of amazing footage from the Northeast with Stripers and Albacore, and ended with Pacific Striped Marlin in Mexico. Our World Angling crew member Jeremy Cameron at Fliesandfins.com produced this piece, including the music; a dynamite spanish guitar track! Thanks to jeremy for all his effort in compiling this piece, we can sympathize with the amount of hard work it is. Then came the full length final edit of Tarpon Season- the 20 minute version of what won Drakemag.com Best Fishing Film. We then showed a short piece of our upcoming work in Louisiana fishing for monster reds tilted Rolling Back Into Plaquemines. Then the main event, PERMIT! To the best of our knowledge no one has yet released a documentary devoted entirely to catching Permit on fly. The film is still in a working edit and will not be officially released until later this year, but all the people who turned out got a sneak peak at some truly amazing footage. The show ended with the much anticipated appearance of Frisbee Dave, Mike Allen, and my uncle Joe outside Sandy’s cafe.
I would like to thank Dave for his tremendous help in this project, Mike Allen for his dedication and hard work, as well as all of my clients, friends and supporters who have made this possible.
In the aftermath it looks like we inspired at least one person to go out and get it done. Dave was lucky enough to be on Capt. Mark Phillips’ boat when Bryan Holeman, aka the Bear, landed his first permit on fly. It was a nice fish, around 20lbs., and was one of the coolest eats ever. Bear made a great 60′ shot, and teased the permit with the fly as it followed for about 30 feet. Brian did his patented move to get the fly to drop, and the permit went face down and chewed it. For a second the fish wallowed face down before it realized it was hooked. 20 minutes later Bear was making out with it for the camera. It was truly a special moment, Bear’s gentle side came through as he looked at his gorgeous fish.
Thanks again for everyone’s support of the new movie, and keep posted for future showing dates and locations.
